20/20 MDS® Workshop Kit: Effective Communication-Advanced
In Effective Communication-1 we focused on the ‘mechanics’ of communication and less on the more behavioural side of the process. In this module, our focus will therefore be on the behavioural or what are often called “soft” skills side of things.
As we saw in the first course, the fundamental purpose of communication is to get your message across successfully to others. This is a process that involves both the sender of the message and the receiver. This process leaves room for error, with messages often misinterpreted by one or more of the parties involved. This often causes unnecessary confusion and stops the individuals involved in the process from achieving their communication goals.
In this course we will consider the two sides of the communication equation in detail –the transmitter’s or communicator’s role (sending the message effectively) and the recipient’s or listener’s role (receiving the message effectively). In so doing we will look at the ‘art’ of talking and listening. That is, how communication can be designed to create a genuine two-way experience that can be of high mutual value.
