This topic is presented in four stages. These sequential stages consist of:

- Empathize with the other party in the negotiation or seek to build the relationship.
- Adapt or build in flexibility to trade options as the negotiation unfolds.
- Learn from your negotiating experiences (by watching and listening carefully).
